Down to Earth

Do you know the ph of your soil? When choosing plants for your garden, you need to know whether the soil is acid, neutral or alkaline, as different plants thrive in different soils. Testing is easy to do and kits can be bought at your local garden centre. The two samples below show one soil that is neutral (around 6.8 to 7.0) and another that is acid (somewhere around ph 6.0 - 6.5). Acid soil is ideal for ericaceous (lime-hating) plants such as rhododendrons, camellias and heathers. A neutral soil is good for most plants - this one comes with another problem though, it's really heavy clay!!
